Tuna Farms?

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

We’ve all been hearing horror stories about over fishing in our oceans. Many farmed varieties of fish are cropping up all over. You’ve certainly heard of salmon farms, and tilapia farms, and there are lots of catfish farms in the south, but tuna farms?

A company from Hawaii is planning such an aquaculture venture. They’re in the planning stages of the worlds first commercial bigeye tuna farm.

They’re planning a 250 acre farm about three miles off the coast of the Big Island in Hawaii. Production is planned at 6,000 tons of bigeye per year. The full scale production is really just a drop in the bucket. In ’07, fisherman supplied over 224 thousand tons of wild bigeye from the Pacific.
