Let’s Go Camping

Too hot for fishin’?

The air running too long and hard?

How about going camping?

You don’t have to take a week off work, the weekend will do and in a pinch, you can pitch a tent in the backyard. The kids will love it!

Dig out your camping gear. Come on you ‘do’ know where it all is don’t you? It’s a great time to test out

(1) if your tent held up being in the attic for a year (or more)
(2) how long it takes you to put it up
(3) whether it’s time to get a bigger or better one

As long as you’re at it, pull out your camping stoves too. You can cook outside for a couple days. There is nothing tastier than breakfast cooked outside. And hotdogs, and burgers and even hobo stew. (Hobo stew is where everyone on your trip brings a can of something. You brown some hamburger and then toss all the other canned goods in and let it simmer. Yum!) And as long as you’re at it, how about some day-old donuts sliced like a bagel with a slice of pineapple in the middle, warmed in foil over a fire. YUM! Or biscuits wrapped around the end of a stick cooked over the flame. When done fill with jelly! YUM!

All that good fresh air will do your family good, and you might even decide to make camping out a regular event.

Plus checking out all your gear, from camping tents to skillets, to water containers, now, will give you a head up on what you need to replace before fall camping season hits.

Be prepared. Oh wait, isn’t that the scout motto? They’re the ultimate campers and where many of us got our start!

Let’s go camping!

Being Prepared

Sunday, February 20th, 2011

You never know just how unprepared you are until you’re faced with a storm. It might be a tornado, a hurricane, or a blizzard like we had here, back to back.

A blizzard is basically a sustained snowstorm with strong winds and reduced visibility.

Luckily, the work places closed down so we were able to ride the storm out at home. It really packed a punch.

Look at the snow on the truck! We had a another storm just a few days later too.

Now we aren’t built with a winter coat like animals.

Drifter

No, we need protection from the elements. Ever tried to start a vintage tractor when the temps are in the single digits? NOT FUN. Not easy, and frigid.

That’s when you’re thankful that you had some insight long before the storm hit. We made sure we had wood for the fireplace, in case the power went out, we made sure we had gas for the tractor, in case the road gets blocked, plenty of easy food and water and most importantly warm outdoor clothing.

You’ve got to be prepared for inside the house as well as outside. Thick warm gloves come in very handy attaching a battery, clearing snow, and tree limbs. A winter hat helps hold the heat in and everyone should have an all weather warm coat.

snow mess

You can make a big mess with a blade.

You just never know what the weather will be. It’s best to at least try to be prepared.

Memorial Day Weekend

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Memorial Day weekend is fast approaching. Have you made your ‘get ready’ list? Your grocery list?

If you’ve never created a ‘get ready’ list AND you’ve ended up at the lake with no charcoal, or matches, or grill….. then you should know, you need one!

Take a simple sheet of paper and then think chronologically. Think of each thing you’ll do this weekend at the lake, from fishing, to cooking, to entertainment and start the list. It doesn’t have to be pretty – it’s your first draft.

For instance, you might think that the first thing you’ll do when you get there is put up the tent. So the tent needs to be first on your list. Then think about all the things that go with or into the tent and add those to your list. Sleeping bags, pillow, inflatable mattress, air pump, lantern….

Then think about your fishing. Do you have? Your license? Your tackle? Your poles and an extra one just in case? Bobbers? Bait? Put them all down on that list.

Think about the heat. Do you have sunscreen on your list? Drinks? Ice? Baby wipes or paper towels for messes? A hat? A jacket in case it’s cold and windy or an unexpected storm blows in?

What about meals. Think about each one separately. Sure you ‘expect’ to be frying fish so you’ll need a frying pan, matches, charcoal, spatula. But what if your catching skills are slow?

You might need hot dogs, and buns and mustard and relish…. That’s one meal, now keep on going…..

Think about desserts or snack foods too. Did you pack the ingredients for s’mores? Put it on the list, graham crackers, Hershey bars, large marshmallows.

Got a good knife to make the marshmallow holders? Or do you have some already made? Put it on the list.

Kids can eat too many s’mores and get a tummy ache. Better add some Pepto and some Coca-cola to the list….

Like the Scout’s motto, Be Prepared, well you just can’t be ‘too’ prepared!

Make a list so you’ll be ready, for anything.
