Australian Teens Reel in a BIG ONE

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Australian teens reeled in TWO huge catches recently in New South Wales. They were out fishing and pulled in two bricks of bills. Those bricks contained 20’s & 50’s secured with rubber bands and wrapped in plastic.

Sounding like something a little fishy, or even a drug deal gone bad, the boys turned the funds in to the local police. If the true owner doesn’t show, well, they get to keep the fifty grand!

They’re cheaper than a 4-wheel Gator, require less pasture than a mule, and are hardy, fun animals.

You can learn more about donkeys as pack animals at where else, but donkeys.com.

Your donkey can help carry all that equipment in for you and be a great companion while you’re there.

Send ‘em Fishin’

Friday, August 21st, 2009

This past year, Sierra Club sent 50,000 kids fishing.

The Sierra Club’s hunting and fishing program donated fishing rods to youth programs across the US. With the success of this program, the Sierra Club hopes to instill a lifelong love of fishing in the new generation.

I’d say the program was a huge success. Success spills over. These kids will grow up and take their friends fishing, and their families, all because of one little fishing program from the Sierra Club.

You Get a Line, And I’ll Get Two Poles

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Update from Washington State:

As of August 15, 2009, fishermen will be able to utilize TWO fishing poles on most of Washington’s 8000 lakes.

An extra pole will add an extra $20, or $5 for seniors, to their annual recreational fishing license. Revenue from the new fee will go to fish hatcheries in the state.

There were a few lakes excluded, including Amber, Bear, Medical, and North Silver Lakes, as well as rivers, streams and saltwater. You can view a complete list at http://wdfw.wa.gov.licensing/twopole/.

Seems a little alcohol was involved…

Pier Fishing

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Where oh where is the longest fishing pier on the Gulf of Mexico?

It’s in Alabama!

The new pier is a full twenty feet wide, and 1540 long. That’s over a quarter mile! It has 2,448 feet of fishing space down the railing.

Not only is the new pier BIG, they added indoor concessions, seating, retail space, comfort stations and wheelchair accessible rail fishing.

Permit to fish off the pier (in addition to a saltwater fishing license or pier license) is $8 for adults and children under 12 are $4. Just looking? They’re let you in for $3.

Fishing Across the US

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Father and son team, Jeff and Taylor Turner are on the adventure of a lifetime. Their plan? Fish in fifty states in fifty days!

Impossible?

They started planning their summer 09 trip an entire year ago. They researched fishing locations and made a selection, one per state. Once they had their fifty spots located they started plotting a course.

Their journey will cover 15,000 miles by land, 6000 miles by air and 500 miles by water.

They headed out mid-June in an RV in Pennsylvania and are working their way clockwise around the country. They’ve saved the outermost states for last. Alaska is scheduled for day 46 and Hawaii on day 48.

Their adventure will certainly give them plenty of bonding time, and personally, I can’t wait for the movie!

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Li Huiyan, from China believed that the river that once flowed overland decades ago should now be deep underground, directly below his house. He hired 30 villagers for half a year to dig a big shaft fifty feet down.

He hit water!

The river still flows deep underground. He has since installed a staircase to reach the waters and the best part? There’s fish!

He sells fish he catches in his own kitchen!

North to Alaska

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Little Alaskan girl, Tegan, was on a big fishing trip with her folks. They were dreaming of winning the fishing derby. Little miss Tegan was dreaming of reeling in a mermaid.

Much to her surprise, the humongous catch she reeled in, with the help of her Dad, wasn’t a mermaid. But it did win the derby!

Little Miss Tegan is credited with winning the Homer Alaska Jackpot Halibut Derby with her non-mermaid 138 pound halibut.

How to cook a perch

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

How to cook a perch.

Suppose all you caught on your recent fishing trip was perch. Suppose you were reliant upon your catch for a meal. What do you do now?

Well, it’s still a fish!

You can fillet a perch. You end up with silver dollar size fillets.

You can batter and fry these up just like any other fish. If you catch enough of them, well you’ve got a decent meal!
