Man Cave

Saturday, November 5th, 2011

I stopped at a yard sale the other day, basically in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma. It was mostly tools and set outside the guys metal building, basically an additional garage.

I knew a fella that knew these people and they called this ‘garage’ ‘the shop’ so I asked the guy what he did.

I was expecting welder… carpenter… or something along those lines, but no, his ‘shop’ was really just his man cave.

Inside he had the requisite tools and all but he’d done the walls not in cabinetry, but football memorabilia. Plus a big screen, big old chairs and a fridge.

He had a Darren Sproles Saints Jersey framed and hung on one wall and a lot of other team things too. As well as a neon Budweiser light and a big old pit bull lounging in there as well.

That’s one reason I like to stop at yard sales, ya just never know what you’ll see or who you’ll meet.

Tip of Our Hats

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

Ya know, I live ‘just this far’ from a lake, and while I’ve been on bass boats, and ski boats, pontoon boats and jon boats, I’ve never been on a sailboat.

While most of the sailboaters spend their time up on the lakes closer to the city, you do see an occasional sailboat on the local lake every now and then.

When one passes by, you tend to feel a little ‘backwoods’ next to their ‘Thurston Howell the 3rd’ look. While we’re wearing jeans and flannel, they tend to be decked out in some fine sailing clothes.

Yup, from the top of their head (sailing caps) to their neoprene bodysuits and even their fancy shoes, you can tell they’re serious about their sport.

We just acknowledge them with a tip of our hats as they sail on by.

Little Boy’s Room

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Sometimes when you’re decorating (or the spouse is decorating) a little boy’s room, it’s a great time to ‘sport’ it up some.

A little boy I know is having his room done in football. Not a far stretch for this part of the country. His parents were looking to do the room as affordable as possible and decided to do the room in St Louis Rams. (They aren’t from Oklahoma!)

They bought a fathead and are getting a Brandon Lloyd Rams Jersey framed for the opposite wall. Add in a team comforter and some football lamps and he has a room he can grow in without changing things up too much.

Tailgating

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Have you ever driven down Lindsey Street in Norman Oklahoma on game day? (Oklahoma Sooners)

It’s a MAZE of people set up selling wares to the people attending the game. People set up food booths, some out of the back of their trucks, some under canopies. It’s like the food booths at the fair, only everything is crimson and cream.

I know one fella that went and got his food vending license and set up his ‘booth’ selling chili and made a lot of money, (over a thousand) in just one afternoon, with just one product!

Can you imagine the profit potential?

What would you need to get started?

Well, you’d need a license of course, a sales tax permit and the like, but then you’d need help standing out from the crowd of other vendors. You’ll need tailgating supplies like:

(1) a tent or canopy
(2) table(s)
(3) seating
(4) coolers
(5) grill
(6) logo’d products

and maybe even rain ponchos and umbrellas! Shoot, you could even get a cornhole game or two for the kiddies to play. The parents follow the kids ya know.

You could be set up and ready before the next home game.

Geez, why am I telling you this? I should do this myself!

Ideas don’t keep – something must be done about them!

Noodling

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Have you ever scuba dived?

Me either, haven’t even thought about it, other than when I used to watch Flipper growing up, that and what was that show with LLoyd Bridges? Oh yeah, Seahunt.

Around here there isn’t much choice in scuba diving, you either take lessons in the city, or you wing it at Lake Tenkiller. (Lake Tenkiller has clear deep water, perfect “I’m told” for diving.)

I can tell you one thing though, if I were to show up on a fishin’ weekend, EVEN at Tenkiller, that the fellas would have a good laugh on me, if I were to come prepared to dive wearing a wetsuit!

Course they might change their mind when I tell ‘em that wetsuits aren’t just for divin, or surfin’. Shoot I bet wetsuits would come in real handy noodlin’ in cool water or for flyfishin’ instead of waders.

Safety First

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

When my Dad was young, it was nothing to walk down the street in his small town carrying a shotgun.

When I was growing up, every pickup in the county had a gun rack in the back, with guns in it.

These days, if you have a gun at home, you need to have it secured. For your own family’s safety and the safety of others.

Course you could have a wood and glass cabinet to store them in or you could do one better and get yourself a gun safe.

I know what you’re thinking. Too pricey.

Have you considered getting a used gun vault?

Gun vaults resemble large western style safes. They’re huge and heavy and nearly impossible to steal, much less break into. You can even fine them with biometric scanners to afford you even more safety.

Think about it. Your family’s safety should come first.

Game Day with a Spartan

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

If you live in Oklahoma and you aren’t a fan of OSU or OU, well, you’d better be a Cowboys fan.

Otherwise, you get the dirtiest looks when you wear another team’s logo to town.

That’s OK. Diversity is good.

I know this one guy that moved here from Michigan to attend OU. Of course he’s a Sooner fan, but you know, deep down inside, he’s a Spartan through and through.

You should see his ‘man cave’ AKA his garage. Full of MSU Football memorabilia.

The room is decked in Spartan helmets and jerseys, a signed football or two along with his big screen tv always on the sports channel, or a tivo’d Spartan game.

He throws a mean football party too. You know where I’ll be come game day!

Go Spartans!

Sooner Red

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

Round these parts, if you were to head into town on a ‘game day’ Saturday you’d be surrounded by a sea of red.

Sooner Red.

Same with any other game day, football game day that is. Football’s just big.

People enjoy gettin’ together for games, cooking out, hanging around, and dressing in their team colors. Around here all you can find is red.

So, when we get invited over to an ‘anything but Sooner’ party we ‘real quick like’ start looking for some cheap nhl jerseys online. Saves time. Saves money and lets us choose those elusive teams we might not find in our local ‘all red’ stores.

Maine

Maine is known for more than just Stephen King and lobster, there’s also great fishing. There’s tons to see and do in Maine Outdoors. You’ll find great mountain bike trails, and whitewater rafting as well as great fishing.

Check out the photo album at BlackFly.com http://theblackfly.com/photo-album/ for all things Maine, flora and fauna abound. And the lighthouses! You could make a whole vacation out of just visiting lighthouses!

You’ll like it so much you’ll want to follow them on facebook http://www.facebook.com/pages/TheBlackFly/107056739398879 and twitter http://twitter.com/#!/TheBlackFly.

Maine’s certainly on our ‘to visit’ list. You should put it on yours!

Taking the Memphis Play to Our Livingroom

Saturday, September 3rd, 2011

Guest post written by Rebecca White

One of the things that I like to think about when it comes to watching movies is all the stuff that went into making a movie. My family and I seem to watch lots of movies together. Which my husband and I have always loved to do that and it makes for some pretty cheap entertainment. But I also like to find some ones that are a little less mainstream. That way most of the time it’s more surprising.

While I was looking online to get some ideas about some new movies for us to watch, I found some information about a hearing test. I read through it and signed up to take one to see if I need hearing aids.

I read some information about the Memphis musical filming that’s available to watch on DVD and I rented it online. It seemed like it would be really great and it was! I think the whole family enjoyed it and I’ve gotten several requests to find similar things for us to watch on our family movie nights.
