You Get A Line

You get a line
I’ll get a pole
We’ll go down to the fishin’ hole

When I was just a kid one of our favorite fishing bait was worms. Big old fat earthworms dug up from behind Grandpa’s chicken house.

Not many people have chicken houses these days, but did you know that you could raise worms in the house? Yes! Under the kitchen sink!

You just need a medium sized plastic container filled with a little dirt, and lots of moist, shredded newspaper and a cover (with air holes please). Then add in your worms. Your worms will start eating the newspaper. After the worms have started to multiply, then you can start adding your kitchen waste matter to the bin. The worms will ‘compost’ your potato peelings, your carrot tops, and your other kitchen waste. (Don’t feed your worms meat!)

A property cared for worm bin won’t smell or attract flies. The surface should be damp, not wet. You should allow for air circulation and don’t feed more than the worms can process. Burying the food in the litter will keep down the fly population.

As your worm population grows, you may remove worms to a second bin to ‘eat’ more garbage or you can remove some to your garden. OR, you can grab your favorite cane poles or fishing rods and head down to your favorite fishing hole.

Deep Blue Sea

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Around these parts, we fish at the lake, or a creek, or sometimes an old farm pond. And seldom do we go outside our little comfort zone. Yeah, sometimes one of us will head up north and we’ll try our hand at fly-fishin’ but that’s around it. Think it’s probably because we’re landlocked.

My buddy and I were talking the other day, about moving outside of our comfort zone and instead of taking a fall ‘huntin’ trip, we decided to at least think about going deep sea fishing instead.

Since we don’t know anything about it, other than it sure looks fun on tv, we looked up a deep sea fishin’ site and started reading the forum, the daily fishin’ reports and info about an upcoming tourney. Nah, we don’t think we’re deep sea tourney material, but the rest? I think we can take on the deep blue sea.

I’m Buyin’ Bait

Monday, July 11th, 2011

We were attending a function for one of the granddaughters, when daughter realized she hadn’t heard from her teenage son in a few hours, and it was getting late. So, she texted him.

No answer.

She called.

No answer.

She borrowed my phone and called and he answered! (kids!)

She asked him “Where are you?”

His reply?

“I’m buying bait.”

LOL – now that’s a kid after my own heart!!!

He’s starting to get a nice little collection of fishing tackle as well as a bevy of poles and reels.

And of course, fresh bait!

He spent that evening fishing with his cousins. He’s one we don’t have to worry about. He’s a good kid.

He grew up fishin’.

Bait Boat

Monday, July 4th, 2011

I thought I’d seen everything. Fishin’ wise that is. But today, I saw something that blew my socks off(if’n I’d had socks on.)

I saw a fella and his boys fishin’ on the bank with cane poles, playin’ with a remote control boat. Then I realized that it was no ordinary rc boat, naw, it was a “remote control fishing boat“! Now I don’t mean this was a rc boat painted up to ‘look’ like a fishin’ boat, this was a real live FISHIN’ BOAT!

Or you could call it a “bait boat” I s’pose.

rc boat

rc boat

It’s the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. It’s a remote control boat, with a fishing pole attached. You see fish outta your reach, so you send the little rc boat over to where the fish are, they take the bait, you remote control the boat back to where you are and ‘poof’ you got a fish!

You can use it to troll around a dock, a shoreline or send it out 3-400 feet.

It is just too cool. They come in different boat styles, even Ed Hardy for those ‘in style’ folks OR can be used on any rc boat.

Man, I got to get me one of these remote control fishing poles!

WWMD

Ever feel like MacGyver?

I know I do sometimes, well at least when no-one else is listening or watching…

You’ve been there, out on the boat, or at your favorite fishin’ spot when something vital breaks down on ya. You’re out of cell-phone range and have no credit card on your person anyhow, in other words, you’re in a world of hurt.

Those are the times when you can’t just sit in the boat in the middle of the lake ‘forever’. Nope, you’ve got to get your wits about you and MacGyver some way out of your situation.

Pull a WWMD. (What would MacGyver do?)

MacGyver would have LOVED Gerber Tools!

Macgyver would have pulled out his favorite multi-tool and got the job done.

Gerber-Multi-plier Needlenose

Vancouver Attractions – Capilano Suspension Bridge

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

I know folks that take off at the holidays and go skiing. I know folks that head to the islands at New Years, but how many of us get to ‘take off’ and go fishing out of state?

What about fishing at the Capilano Suspension Bridge in Vancouver? Aw, I bet they don’t allow people to fish from the bridge, you hardly see that anymore Saw just that on a recent trip to Honobia OK! but I bet there’d be good fishin’ down at the bottom!

You could stay in a nearby property in the Canadian Rockies (more good fishin!) or nearby on Mackenzie Beach in Tofino, B.C.

Talk about a truly unmatched natural setting, the views from Moraine Lake Lodge are breathtaking. Turquoise waters, towering evergreens and majestic views of Mount Stephen, Cathedral Mmountain, Kicking Horse River as well as other nearby Vancouver attractions and the lake.

A fishing trip to Canada just takes your breath away. The scenery as well as the fishing is just so different than it is back here in Oklahoma. Now to get the ‘other half’ to agree to spending Christmas week enjoying the beauty of Canada. That means fishin!!!

Out of the Way Places

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Sometimes the fishin’ buddies seem to pick the most out of the way spots. But you know, there’s a reason they do choose the places they do.

Maybe they’ve been there before. Maybe as a kid, maybe last month, but they ‘know’ that there’ll be good fishin’ there as well as no crowds. Maybe the fishing hole was featured on one of the tv fishing shows, or showcased in a magazine, but most of the time, it’s just word of mouth. Someone’s uncle fished here once and caught ‘the’ big one.

There is nothing worse than Oklahoma red dirt and muddy bottom clay sticking to a new pair of white tennis shoes! The ‘person that does the laundry’ would have a stinkin’ fit! So instead of my ‘usual’ white tennis style shoes, this time I chose a new pair of Walking shoes, brown ones. Shoot, with a brown pair, you can just tap off most of the dirt and no one will ever know where you’ve been…

I broke these new walking shoes in walking around at Sams and the electronic store last week, as well as mowing the lawn. The reason being that you should always break in a new pair of shoes before you do any extended walking or hiking in them. You sure don’t want to get blisters when you’re out at the fishin’ hole – the guys would tease ya half to death!

What kind of shoes are they? Hawkshead. Nice manly name and they’re lightweight WITH waterproof construction. The outer parts are breathable suede and mesh upper made for keeping these feet dry and comfortable. Inside there’s a trail sole and absorba-sole insoles for durability & comfort.

As it was, the guys didn’t even notice my new walking (fishing) shoes, but my feet sure appreciated them!

Now, if the guys could just pick a fishing hole that’s NOT two miles off the road!

Harrah Heritage Park

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Harrah Cub Scouts Pack 65 recently worked with the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Department to build permanent fish habitats in the waters at Harrah Heritage Park.

The project helped the boys earn their World Conservation award.

The group sank concrete blocks filled with concrete and tubing, creating many small fish habitats. Fish will utilize the structures almost immediately.

Kudos to Pack 65!

Bassmaster in Oklahoma

Friday, June 18th, 2010

I ‘so’ intended to get over to Lake Thunderbird this past weekend for the tourney. I wasn’t going to enter, but, I wanted to at least see the results…

I missed that one but I sure don’t want to miss the Bassmaster Elite Series. It’s coming back to Oklahoma after skipping us for the last two. The tourney began yesterday on the Arkansas River, with the Muskogee Chamber as host.

Weigh-ins and launches will be at the Three Forks Harbor in Fort Gibson.

Fishermen will be fishing along a hundred mile section of the river from Catoosa to Kerr Lake.

The Sooner Run winner will net a hundred grand.
