California Dreamin’ (of fishin’)

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

All the leaves are brown…..
and the sky is gray…..
I’ve been for a walk
on a winter’s day
I’d be safe and warm
if I was in LA
California Dreamin’
California Fishin’…..

OK – so that’s not really how it goes! LOL

But there is a lot of good fishin in California, ever been around Staybridge Palmdale CA?

Palmdale has this aquaduct flowing through it – I know, I know, WHO fishes in a cement river?

Well, don’t discount it – there’s plenty of big old fish in there! Stripers and catfish! :)

If you really don’t want to try cement river fishin’ you can always check out some of the local lakes, like Elizabeth Lake. It’s just 10 miles west of Palmdale. You need an adventure pass and it’s day fishing only… but heck, you probably want to stay in one of the antelope valley hotels or a lancaster california hotel then get up in the morning and try another lake. Like say, the Antelope Valley Reservoir.

If you’re in the area you’ll want to check out as many fishing holes as you can find. Check out the Apollo Park Lakes, each named after astronauts. They’re popular fishing hole located in the middle of the desert.

There’s no shortage of fishing spots and they’re all certain to get you California Dreamin’ (of fishin’)

:)

47

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

I’ve always been a counter. When I was little I counted the ceiling tiles in the church and the number of individual stained glass panes. I still count today. I count strokes as I brush my teeth and steps to the office. I count the cars that pass me on the interstate… And even though many numbers flow through my brain, I do have a favorite number.

My favorite number has always been 47.

If I had to pick a number between 1 and whatever, I’d chose 47. Pick a number for the lottery and ‘if possible’ I’d choose 47.

Forty-seven is not just a prime number. 47 has a flow to it, a feel about it, but, it’s also the age my brother was when he died this week.

My brother was a trickster – loved to make people laugh. He was a fixer – he could fix anything. He also loved the outdoors, hunting, camping, fishing, and just being near the water. He was on the water, doing what he loved when he passed.

We love you brother, and we will all miss you.

And yes, 47 will no longer be my favorite number. In honor of my brother’s memory, I’m getting a new favorite number, how’s 97 sound?

Harrah Heritage Park

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Harrah Cub Scouts Pack 65 recently worked with the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Department to build permanent fish habitats in the waters at Harrah Heritage Park.

The project helped the boys earn their World Conservation award.

The group sank concrete blocks filled with concrete and tubing, creating many small fish habitats. Fish will utilize the structures almost immediately.

Kudos to Pack 65!

Preparedness on all Fronts

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Do you ever read the labels on your medications? You should you know.

Some medicines don’t mix well with other medications. Some labels say you shouldn’t take that particular medication and operate heavy machinery. This means you really shouldn’t drive.

There’s a new site, still in the building stages, that looks like it’ll have plenty of information on pharmecuticals so that you can keep up with possible interactions, drug recalls, as well as updates and contraindications.

You should go ahead and bookmark drugalert.org now – so that you’ll have it at easy access – just in case.

A good outdoorsman is always prepared.

Gulf Oil Spill

Friday, June 25th, 2010

I heard that the Gulf Oil spill now encompasses almost a third of the Gulf. Oh, those poor fisherman.

Not just the tourists or weekend fishers, but those poor professional fishers, the ones that bring in the big catches for the whole US.

Makes me glad I live here, just a stone’s throw from a fishing creek, and two stones from the lake…

Fishy Odors

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Have you seen the commercial, for, I don’t know, is it trash bags or room deodorizer, where the big giant fish is swimming around the living room, like a big old pet dog?

First time I saw it, I was like “What the heck is that?” only to hear the little boy in the commercial ask his Dad, “What’s that?”

The answer was “Last night’s dinner.”

LOL

I dunno, I think it’d be kinda cool to have a big old honkin’ fish as a pet….

NOT Roughin’ It at union square hotels

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Sometimes, just sometimes, when you’ve finished a good day of fishin’ you just wanna lay back and relax.

Roughing it means ‘you’ have to build the campfire and ‘you’ have to cook dinner and clean up after yourself. Roughing it can mean sleeping on the old hard ground or on a cumbersome cot or air mattress.

Sometimes you’ve just had enough roughing it. That’s when you pack up everything, get out of Big Basin and point the vehicle towards San Francisco and get a hotel room!

What’s great about a hotel room?

(1) You get a nice soft comfortable bed.
(2) You get ALL the hot water you want for a shower as long as you want.
(3) Room service !!!!

There’s nothing like relaxing after a long day fishin’ and sometimes, just sometimes you deserve a little ‘niceness’.

Pricey but Worth It

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

World renown fisherman Ray Scott has created his own fishing venture. He’s opened his own bed and breakfast, with bass!

He’s three lakes on his property (oh heavens!) and has hosted fishing with many big wigs (including a president). His prices are nothing to shake a stick at either, rumor has it that it’s over $500 to fish all day there. Of course, that comes with a meal or two and the use of a boat…

Want to sleep over and fish the next day? The ‘Presidential’ guesthouse runs just under two grand.

Fisherman with deep pockets will love it though. Great bass, tree lined water, named the best little bass pond on the planet by Outdoor Life, just begs you to come fish it’s waters.

All for Nothing

What happened to the WINNER of the marlin fishing tournament in Big Rock?

Seems the winning fisherman forgot something. He forgot to get a license.

The prize was $912,825.
The license was $15.

That one little slip up cost them almost a million dollars.

Aw, the agony…..

Baby Salmon Released in California

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Over in San Pablo Bay (California) the state’s Department of Fish and Game recently released over 16 MILLION young salmon into San Pablo Bay. They hope this will help the struggling salmon population recover from recent declines.

The fall run of chinook, or king, salmon in the Sacramento River provides much of the fish found off the California and Oregon coasts. But since 2007, this population has dipped to levels so low that fishing has been canceled or curtailed greatly.

Fishermen blame the decline on the delta’s vast series of pumps which divert water to farms that the salmon need to survive. Others blame changing ocean conditions.

I for one, am glad, that California has taken the initiative to aid the salmon population.
