Shrimp Going Up?

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

When shrimp are on special at the grocery store, there’s always a line.

Do you think that the ‘issue’ in the Gulf will seriously affect the shrimping industry as well as our own supply of ‘shrimp for the barbie’?

I sure hope not. But I seriously see it as a distinct possibility.

While most of us probably prefer fresh shrimp, in a pinch, frozen is fine.

I’m thinking it might be time to do some serious stocking up!

The NOAA tells us that the Gulf commercial fisherman brought in more than a billion pounds of fish and shellfish in ’08.

Outdoor Fleece

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Fleece is in style man. It’s everywhere!

If you happen to venture into a fabric store just before a holiday you’ll see lines of people buying decorative fleece? There were SO many people there buying baskets full of fleece yardage that I had to ask “What are you making out of the fleece?”

It seems the majority of the people in line were making either baby blankets or couch throws. (Couch throws are large pieces of fleece with finished edges that you toss over the back of the couch for decoration that’s also used to cuddle up with on a cool night.)

At the department stores one of the biggest sellers this past Christmas (and Valentines) were those big fleece snuggies. They ran the gammet from colorful to animal prints and camouflage. I even saw little fleece snuggies for dogs!

Talk about a love of fleece.

Fleece isn’t just for blankies anymore – people love outdoor fleece too!

Today’s synthetic fleece is perfect for most any weather. The fabric is so soft, comfy, WARM, quick drying and very durable. Today’s fleece also resists pilling and stands up to repeated washings and dryings.

Like its wool counterpart, synthetic counterpart is great for keeping warm. You can choose a lightweight fleece jacket for a cool evening, layer for days that are both chilly and warm, or bundle up in a thick fleece jacket that’ll keep you warm even in the coolest weather. Fleece (and therefore the garments made from fleece) can range from cool summer-weight fabrics to extra-dry and extra-stretch making fleece a true all weather fabric.

Fleece wicks moisture away from the body and dries quickly. No matter what brand of fleece you choose, from Fruit of the Loom to Craghoppers, you’ll find affordable clothing for every member of your family.

Coronado Fishing (California)

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

This lucky guy I know had to go to a conference in San Diego at the coronado hotel . Sound boring?

Do you realize what’s around there?

You have the San Diego bay and the Pacific ocean. BOTH! You can rent a boat and sail the bay. You can rent a pole (if you forgot to pack one) and fish the pier.

You can go charter a boat and go deep sea fishing! But no three hour tours please! LOL

You can book half days, full days or just about everything in between. Fish for yellowtail, white sea bass, barracude and more. The Coronado Islands are ‘just right there’! You will need a Mexican fishing license but your boat dealer or your concierge can handle that for you!

The point is, once he realized that he didn’t have to spend his whole time at the ‘conference’ he knew he was gonna have a grand old time. And he did!

I’m jealous. I’ve not been fishing in California, much less in a ‘bay’ or the ocean for that matter.

I wonder if I can talk the spouse into going to a convention or something in San Diego… I’m ready to call up the coronado hotel rates on my pc and make ‘our’ coronado hotel reservations.

Surely I can talk my spouse into that. Ya’ think?

Little Axe Tornado

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

While it’s terribly possible that the gulf problem will severely affect fishing, not only in the gulf, but onshore as well.

If you can’t go deep sea fishing – at least you can still go bass fishing – right here in OK.

Did you see all the destruction that was caused this week by the tornadoes? The Little Axe area just east of the Lake Thunderbird dam was hit hard. So was the lake.

You wouldn’t think it would affect the lake too much, but all the boats that were anchored and stored there were demolished. It’s a mess.

I feel for the boat owners. AND for all the people affected.

I couldn’t get to the lake to take pictures – the whole place was blocked off. (As were many of the other roads.)

Here’s an image of what was left from the administration building at the school.

Sad…

The whole football stadium is gone too. Graduation ceremonies have been moved to Noble High.

Outdoor Clothing

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

What do you wear when you head for your favorite fishing spot at the lake? Old wore out jeans and rumpled t-shirts?

If that’s true, you should consider some of the more modern choices you can find today in outdoor clothing.

Today you’ll find whole lines of clothing created just for the outdoorsman! I first ventured out of my comfort zone (read that as jeans and a tee) when a relative requested a fleece North Face jacket for Christmas. Since I hadn’t been around any of the ‘nicer’ outdoor wear, well, I was in for sticker shock! I was at first a little taken back by the price tag, but upon closer inspection quickly realized that you do indeed get what you pay for. Durable construction, well stitched seams, and high end fabrics all scream quality.

The fabrics in today’s outdoor clothing are versatile, warm when you want them to keep you warm and cool when you want to be cool. You’ll even find lightweight breathable clothes that will help keep you cool, even in the hot summer sun. Packing for a winter trip? You’ll find gore-tex that’s guaranteed to keep you dry, even in the harshest conditions, down filled jackets to keep you toasty and even t-shirts that breathe in heat to keep you cool, yet act as insulation on cool evenings.

You can even find clothing that will pull double duty. A windshirt made for a runner makes a great jacket to wear on a fishing boat. You know how that wind blows on the lake! Waterproof jackets and pants are a great thing to pack along when fishing.

I’ve just ‘fallen’ for all the versatility, comfort and durability that North Face offers. The one I bought at Christmas was black and a ladies small. The person I bought it for absolutely loves it and after I saw it well, I’m impressed. It’s quality through and through. Well worth the price I paid.

I will no longer be hesitant about spending the money for a quality garment, even if it’s just for a fishing trip.

I needed an excuse anyway.

“Honey, where’s the credit card?”

Bass Fishin’ in Oklahoma

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Oklahoma has great bass fishing all over the state, but some folks say ‘some’ places are better than others.

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation does electronic fishing surveys on most of the lakes and they also gain lots of information from the many bass tourneys across the state.

Bass live 10-12 years and Oklahoma’s bass seem to have a steady age range. There’s a little bit of everything. In 08, at Chimney Rock, the ODWC tallied 71 bass per hour with the biggest weighing over five pounds. Grand Lake had a rate of 83 per hour with the biggest weighing over six pounds.

In the middle of the state the five bigger lakes were measured with Eufaula winning the count. They counted 88 bass per hour with the biggest over five pounds. Arcadia pulled in a low 21 and Thunderbird faired worse with just 16 per hour, but the biggest was over nine pounds.

Northeast’s winner was American Horse with 88 per hour. The Southeast’s was lower with 36 per hour at Sardis.

Bass are a given in Oklahoma and sometimes it’s a toss up as to ‘which’ lake to choose to fish. But surveys show there are decent sized fish in most of the lakes and we won’t find them if we don’t ‘go fishin’!

Lake Tenkiller

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Lake Tenkiller is one of Oklahoma’s premier lakes. Clear water attracts not only fisherman, but scuba divers!

The fishing is good, and there’s more to do there, like camping, hiking, golf, water sports, and NATURE! Tenkiller sports over 12,000 acres of water and 130 miles of shoreline, not to mention the Illinois River…

Beautiful, clear water at Tenkiller is in the foothills of the Ozarks. Dogwood trees abound and the foliage is just, well gorgeous. Many birds use Tenkiller in their migratory path. You might get to see Canada geese, ducks, monarch butterflies, warblers, and bald eagles!

The lake’s ten marinas and 14 parks are kept up to date and clean by the US Corps of Engineers.

Got a boat? There are 24 launching ramps, three floating restaurants and islands to explore. (Look for the goats and you’ve found Goat Island.)

The rock walls and the clear water just beckon. In fact if you were to stop every boat headed east on I-40 on Friday evening you’d find that most of them are headed to the lake. Not just any lake either, Lake Tenkiller.
