Carpe Diem

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

A while back I talked about how Asian carp were taking over many waterways (and lakes) up north and how someone ought to figure out how to make them palatable and eat them! That would solve the crisis.

Well someone did!

Lockwood Restaurants in Chicago (the Palmer House Hilton) has done just that. The chef started out with ceviche (served with wasabi) and moved along to carp chowder and even fried carp.

The hopes are that the mainstream public will see that carp is indeed edible thereby causing carp to become more table-ready. More people out there fishing, catching and eating carp WILL help to knock down the infestation.

CARPe diem.

Lake Poway Fishing Pass

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Lake Poway in California has come up with a new angle on fishing. The city will be offering ‘monthly’ fishing passes beginning July 1st.

The fee will be $90 for and $42 for bass. The savings results from not having to stop and procure a permit every time they visit.

While some of us might think the monthly fees are a little pricey, they actually save the NC fisherman a little bit of moula.

Daily fishing permits are $6, so regular fisherman will save a considerable amount each month.

Stats show that sport fishermen make up the biggest percentage of fisherman with family fisherman make up the biggest market.

Summer hours are 7 a.m. to sunset on other days.

A state fishing license is not required at Lake Poway. There is a nonresident parking charge of $5 per auto, recreational vehicle or bus and $2 per motorcycles on weekends and holidays only.

For Sale Now Free

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

What do you do with a project boat that’s been a project boat for, ‘ahem’ over a decade?

What if the relative at whose house you’re storing it at would love the space back?

What if, to make matters worse, a storm causes a large tree to fall on the boat?

You get rid of it!

You offer it for sale on Craigslist as a project boat, really really cheap.

No takers.

You pull it around to the front yard while you host a garage sale and put a $100 sign on it.

No takers.

On the second day of the garage sale you change the sign to free.

Hmmmm, people at least glance in that direction now. But for most people, most people can SEE the amount of work involved in getting ‘that’ boat back into the water. Shoot the trailer ought to be worth something.

Then it happens, a mother and two teenage daughters show up and say, “Really? It’s free?”

And then you hear the sweetest words, “I’ll take it!!”

After a lot of backing, and some hammering (motor wouldn’t lift) they pulled out and drove away with their own ‘project boat’.

California Fly Shop

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

When some people call it quits, sometimes other folks can see the opportunity that presents itself.

In California the International Sportsman’s Expo announcedm that due to the economy, it will no longer host a show in San Mateo County and enterprising Karen Carbonnet saw it as a golden opportunity.

You see, Karen owns the California Fly Shop and while she was a vendor at the former show she saw no reason why she couldn’t build her own fly fishing show and that she did.

The show will be held on the grounds of the California Fly Shop. The CFS is a huge store with an even larger parking lot, which will be the location of the annual event. The best part? She’ll be able to offer fly fisherman the ability to try out fly fishing equipment right there in the lot. Major manufacturers have started to sign up destined to make her event ‘the’ big fly fishing event in California. The event is planned for January.

Oregon Opens Black River

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

It still seems a little strange to me that people in other places might have to wait for the opening of a particular stream or region before they can fish in it.

I’m sure it has something to do with extreme weather. So all you Oregonians get ready! June 5th is the opening of the Black River for fishing.

Anglers can fish the Black River from the mouth of Black Lake and all the tributaries west of Interstate 5, including Waddell Creek, Mima Creek, Dempsey Creek, Beaver Creek, Salmon Creek and Blooms Ditch.

For trout, the daily limit is two fish, with a minimum size of 14 inches. Selective gear rules are in effect. Using internal combustion motors is prohibited.

For other game fish, the statewide minimum size and daily limits apply. Selective gear rules are in effect. Internal combustion motors prohibited

Oregonians, let’s get fishin’!

Need a Fast Site Up? Consider Free Wordpress Themes

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Sometimes you just want to get your site up and running just as quickly as possible. I know that ’sometimes’ my web designer is so backed up that she just can’t get to me right away.

When that happens, or you just want to avoid a webguy at all costs, you can start out by creating your own blog with a pre-made theme. You can download wordpress templates right off the net, some are even free. You can find all genre’s too, sports, feminine ones, woodsy looking ones, game styles, scholastic, practically anything you can think of!

You can typically switch one up a bit so that no-one need ever know that you used a free template.

I had this one made - but I’ve used a template before - it was easy - so I highly recommend it!

Fish Tried to Land a Big One

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Location: Pensacola Beach: Bob Sikes Fishing Pier
Time:Friday afternoon
Who: Nice married woman

Circumstances: While trying to net her husbands redfish catch, the fish decided for one more getaway try and ended up pulling Patricia Tenuto into the water. She fell a good 20 feet into the water.

Her spouse, tossed down his pole and called 911 but stayed on the pier with their toddler son. Down under the pier, Patricia hung onto a piling and awaited help.

Lifeguards quickly retrieved her.

As for Paul and Patricia? They say they’ll be back. They’ll be after the one that got away.
