Dallas - Nov 11

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Headed to Dallas on November 11th? You can catch the Drake Fly Fishing Film Tour, hosted by Tailwaters Fly Fishing Company at the Magnolia Theatre. That’s at 3699 McKinney and the tickets are just $15.

It’s not a teaching expedition, it’s more of a grouping of short trailers about fly fishing. You’ll see such great acting from trout, salmon, bass and more.

You can find tickets at www.tailwatersflyfishing.com or call 1-888-824-5420 or 214-219-2500. A portion of the proceeds benefit Project Healing Waters, a non-profit organization that sponsors fishing trips for wounded U.S. military.

Central OK Fishing Report

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Wherever you are – there are fishing reports for your area lakes. Here in Oklahoma, the Department of Wildlife lists fishing reports by area. It’s quick and easy to look up your lake before you head out for a day of fishing.

Here’s the central area report:

Arcadia: No report submitted this week.

Draper: Lake level is below normal due to pump failure. Boat access to the lake is poor and a longer walk to bank fish. The main fishing docks are still floating. One boat ramp is barely usable.

Hefner: No report submitted this week.

Overholser: October 27. Elevation 3-5 ft. below normal, water clear. Striped bass hybrids fair. Blue catfish fair on stinkbait and cut bait. Crappie fair. All other fishing fair. Report submitted by Ron Comer, game warden stationed in Canadian County.

Thunderbird: No report submitted this week.

Wes Watkins: October 26. Elevation normal, water murky. All fishing slow. Report submitted by Mike France, game warden stationed in Pottawatomie County.

Lobstermen

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

I’m ‘not’ that into ‘seafood’, but serve up some catfish and hushpuppies and I’m right there. Even though I’ve never eaten a lobster I’m enthralled with the TV show Lobstermen.

I watch, in amazement, the hours and the back breaking work it takes for the big boats to haul in their catches. Some of those big crawdads are HUGE!

On one show they talked about the $20,000 worth of traps they had set and while my mind was trying to comprehend how small cages could cost so much, I was riveted by the constant action on board the boats. Turmoil, rough waters, small catches, and the ultimate rewards.

Doe Urine

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Doe Urine?

I think a bottle of Doe Urine would be a great stocking stuffer for the young hunter on my Christmas list, don’t you?

It’s a little bit ‘funny’, and yet, it’s a useful gift to a deer hunter.

As an added bonus, it’s on sale right now at Bass Pro for $9.94 (compare to $17.97). Luckily for me, Bass Pro is just down the street from the office.

It’s deer season and I’ve seen more than one hunter from the window of my car.

Bass Pro Shopping

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

As promised, I headed over to Bass Pro yesterday at lunch. I’m always blown away. Not just by the sheer size of the store, but the traffic, the décor and all the outdoors items available.

Just walking in the antlered door, I was greeted and welcomed. On sale were some RedHead polar fleece V-necks, perfect for a certain man on my gift list, and Winchester Cold Ridge Parkas (or bibs) for another. Sadly I forgot to bring my size list with me, so that will have to wait for another day. (Hope I get back before the sale is over – they were just $49.94.)

I passed a great display of socks with warmers (in the $5 range) (perfect for stocking stuffers) and got waylaid by a display of pink camo down jackets. Excellent quality, very soft and warm and a perfect gift for a female hunter. They were just over a hundred.

So many wares.

So little time, I was at ‘lunch’ ya know.

Tree Stand for a Beginner

Monday, October 19th, 2009

I was in Sams the other day and noticed that Sams has tree stands! Who’d a thought you could find a tree stand at Sams?

Course there wasn’t much to choose from.

But seeing that tree stand made me think that a tree stand just might make a good Christmas present for a young deer hunter I know. But, ouch, they’re a little pricey.

Then I happened by Bass Pro’s website. Bass Pro carries tree stands. That’s PLURAL, tree STANDS. That means there are more to choose from.

They even have this smaller sized one, under a hundred dollars, and I’m thinking that this one just might be the ticket.

It sits a full 15 feet high, sturdy steel construction, a seat and a support bar. The whole thing weighs just 35 pounds.

Guess where I’m headed at lunch tomorrow?

Yup, Bass Pro.

Teenage Gift?

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

It’s time to start seriously thinking about Christmas. You don’t have to buy anything this month, unless you stumble across a bargain, but you should be giving some heavy thought to your Christmas list.

I’ve one sportsman on my Christmas list. He’s a teenager. In the past I’ve bought him a ‘real’ sleeping bag, some Coleman lanterns and even a tent. I have to admit that I’m a little bit stumped this year.

Do you think that a gift certificate to Academy Sports would make him happy?

Comments welcome!
