Fishing Across the US

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Father and son team, Jeff and Taylor Turner are on the adventure of a lifetime. Their plan? Fish in fifty states in fifty days!

Impossible?

They started planning their summer 09 trip an entire year ago. They researched fishing locations and made a selection, one per state. Once they had their fifty spots located they started plotting a course.

Their journey will cover 15,000 miles by land, 6000 miles by air and 500 miles by water.

They headed out mid-June in an RV in Pennsylvania and are working their way clockwise around the country. They’ve saved the outermost states for last. Alaska is scheduled for day 46 and Hawaii on day 48.

Their adventure will certainly give them plenty of bonding time, and personally, I can’t wait for the movie!

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there’d be a shortage of fishing poles. ~Doug Larson

Fishin’ in the Kitchen with Dinah…

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Li Huiyan, from China believed that the river that once flowed overland decades ago should now be deep underground, directly below his house. He hired 30 villagers for half a year to dig a big shaft fifty feet down.

He hit water!

The river still flows deep underground. He has since installed a staircase to reach the waters and the best part? There’s fish!

He sells fish he catches in his own kitchen!

Snakehead May Get to Stay

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Rocky, a banned snakehead fish gets to stay in his home, an aquarium in the home of Chris Deverso.

Snakehead fish can potentially eat all the fish in a body of water and the Department of Environmental Conservation had originally declared the entire species a threat to state waterways. Chris had acquired Rocky legally a decade prior at a pet store.

No one wants to get rid of a pet, even a fish!

It looks like the DEC is going to allow Deverso to have a permit to keep the fish at home. You can read more about Rocky and his plight at his myspace page.

Red Moon Rising

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Back in 69, the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland caught fire. Oil soaked debris burned for a couple of hours and became a spark for the passage of the Clean Water Act of 1972 as well as creation of environmental agencies, such as the EPA.

There was even at least one song resulting from the incident, Randy Newman’s Burn On.

There’s a red moon rising

Rolling into Cleveland to the lake

In 2009, the Cuyahoga is full of healthy fish and is a popular water recreational spot.

What’s the latest in fish oil for health?

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

What’s the latest in fish oil for health?

Hoki fish.

Oil from hoki fish seems to be a great inflammation inhibitor. The fish is found off the coast of New Zealand and is controlled by the NZ government and is considered the best managed and sustainable fish on Earth.

Hoki fish are caught by small boats just hours from shore. The catch is easily kept fresh and processed immediately upon hitting shore.

You can find hoki fish oil supplements at select stores or online.

North to Alaska

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Little Alaskan girl, Tegan, was on a big fishing trip with her folks. They were dreaming of winning the fishing derby. Little miss Tegan was dreaming of reeling in a mermaid.

Much to her surprise, the humongous catch she reeled in, with the help of her Dad, wasn’t a mermaid. But it did win the derby!

Little Miss Tegan is credited with winning the Homer Alaska Jackpot Halibut Derby with her non-mermaid 138 pound halibut.

Two Fish

Red Fish

Glow Fish?

Science now brings us green glowing fish!

These colorful fish were created by scientists to help detect environmental pollutants in waterways.

They’re tropical freshwater fish and not likely to escape and ‘take over the world’, but, can you imagine them breeding with the local fish unbeknownst to all until they pull a glowing catfish outta the lake?

That’d scare the pants off of ya!

A Man and His Truck

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

A lady I know drove her husbands big old Ford 250 to work yesterday. She brought her lunch. Tilapia in a loosely secured to-go box from the previous nights dinner out.

She parked the truck for the day.

Temps in the 90’s.

She left her lunch in the truck.

OH MY

All I can say is good thing they’re newlyweds….

A man and his truck and leftover fish just don’t mix.
