Fishing Lure Makes Top Ten Inventions List

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Ben Hobbin’s plastic fishing lure made Popular Science Magazine’s Top Ten Inventions of the Year list. Hobbin’s company, Lake Resources Group, makes IronClad fishing lures. The lures feature a polymer composite material that won’t rip off of a fishing hook.

The idea for the innovative lure came to him when preparing to go ice fishing. Ice fishing makes cold hands. Cold hands have a hard time attaching fishing lure. The result was his non-rip IronClad lure.

Watch for the June issue of Popular Science featuring Hobbins and his IronClad lures.

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

You get up early.

You prepare the food.

You pack the car.

Then take Mom fishing on her special day. Bait her hook for her, get her a cold drink, set up a nice lounge chair for her. Let her enjoy the sunshine and the outdoors.

Who needs lotion or flowers? Mom will love spending time with her loved ones, outside in the fresh air!

All of us search for that perfect trout stream. Those who find it treasure it the rest of their lives. Those who don’t, keep on searching.

Lend A LifeVest

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

This year at Lake Texoma, the Corps of Engineers are taking a stand to keep kids safe while boating and fishing on the lake. The Boat U.S. Foundation’s Life Jacket Loaner Program for kids allows boaters to borrow a child’s like jacket for a day or a weekend for free.

Visit the gate house at the East or West Burns Run Campground after noon, 7 days a week and sign out for an infant, child or youth life jacket. You return them to the same location.

Other lakes also participate in this great loaner program. You can search for your favorite waterspot at: http://www.boatus.com/foundation.

Fishing Restrictions Worldwide

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Scientists and conservation groups are warning that a third of the oceans must be closed to fishing for upwards of two decades in order for depleted fish stocks to recover.

A green paper revealed that 88% of European Union stocks are overfished, with 30% outside safe biological limits. They’re suggesting fleet reductions as well as a dramatic cut in fishing and the inclusion of marine protected areas.

Iceland, Canada and the US have increased fish populations and recovery of seabed habitats by utilizing marine protected areas.

In New England, in the 90’s, a quarter of the fishing areas were closed to vessels and fishing was cut in half. In the last ten years, theres been great fish recovery in those waters.

Worldwide there are presently 4000 marine protected areas. They cover less than one percent of the world’s oceans.
