Garage Sales

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

I stopped the other day at a yard sale, on a Tuesday! A Tuesday!

It was a little old lady with a table full of stuff and some things piled on the tailgate of her pickup and spread across the ground. She was sitting underneath some trees at a small church, on my way home. So, I stopped.

“All this stuff’s a dollar a piece.” She said, pointing towards some man type stuff sitting on the ground. There were a couple of weedeaters, a skateboard and a whole slew of fishing poles and rods.

Hmmm, I thought to myself. I sure wish I knew more about brands of fishing poles. I usually leave that kind of thing to my husband, so I passed on the fishing poles and rods.

I need lessons on fishing poles 101. Are any fishing poles a deal at a buck a pop?

Hmmm, maybe she’ll be back….

Farm Ponds

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

I happen to have a farm pond on my property. It presently doesn’t have any fish in it.

How do I know?

Well, we had a drought a year or so ago, and the pond completely dried up. First time ever. So I’m certain there aren’t any fish left in it.

However, many farm ponds were stocked with fish when they were built. Farm ponds are less often fished than your rivers or lakes so the fish in them have ample opportunity to become quite large.

If you have an option to visit a local farm pond to fish, well go for it! You won’t be disapointed.

Memorial Day Weekend

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Memorial Day weekend is fast approaching. Have you made your ‘get ready’ list? Your grocery list?

If you’ve never created a ‘get ready’ list AND you’ve ended up at the lake with no charcoal, or matches, or grill….. then you should know, you need one!

Take a simple sheet of paper and then think chronologically. Think of each thing you’ll do this weekend at the lake, from fishing, to cooking, to entertainment and start the list. It doesn’t have to be pretty – it’s your first draft.

For instance, you might think that the first thing you’ll do when you get there is put up the tent. So the tent needs to be first on your list. Then think about all the things that go with or into the tent and add those to your list. Sleeping bags, pillow, inflatable mattress, air pump, lantern….

Then think about your fishing. Do you have? Your license? Your tackle? Your poles and an extra one just in case? Bobbers? Bait? Put them all down on that list.

Think about the heat. Do you have sunscreen on your list? Drinks? Ice? Baby wipes or paper towels for messes? A hat? A jacket in case it’s cold and windy or an unexpected storm blows in?

What about meals. Think about each one separately. Sure you ‘expect’ to be frying fish so you’ll need a frying pan, matches, charcoal, spatula. But what if your catching skills are slow?

You might need hot dogs, and buns and mustard and relish…. That’s one meal, now keep on going…..

Think about desserts or snack foods too. Did you pack the ingredients for s’mores? Put it on the list, graham crackers, Hershey bars, large marshmallows.

Got a good knife to make the marshmallow holders? Or do you have some already made? Put it on the list.

Kids can eat too many s’mores and get a tummy ache. Better add some Pepto and some Coca-cola to the list….

Like the Scout’s motto, Be Prepared, well you just can’t be ‘too’ prepared!

Make a list so you’ll be ready, for anything.

Tuna Farms?

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

We’ve all been hearing horror stories about over fishing in our oceans. Many farmed varieties of fish are cropping up all over. You’ve certainly heard of salmon farms, and tilapia farms, and there are lots of catfish farms in the south, but tuna farms?

A company from Hawaii is planning such an aquaculture venture. They’re in the planning stages of the worlds first commercial bigeye tuna farm.

They’re planning a 250 acre farm about three miles off the coast of the Big Island in Hawaii. Production is planned at 6,000 tons of bigeye per year. The full scale production is really just a drop in the bucket. In ’07, fisherman supplied over 224 thousand tons of wild bigeye from the Pacific.

Fishing Lure Collectors

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Did you know that there is a fishing lure collectors club? Me either!

The National Fishing Lure Collectors Club is a not for profit, and been around since 1976. They help foster an awareness of fishing tackle as a collectible and help collectors find, identify and trade old fishing gear.

The club also has information on all kinds of fishing gear, not just lures. You’ll find information on vintage rods and reels, advertising, minnow traps, buckets, creels and more.

If you collect old fishing gear or know someone who does, look into joining the NFLCC, the largest organization devoted to antique fishing paraphernalia. You can find them online at http://www.nflcc.org .

Pharaoh Phishing ?

We’ve come to expect loads of treasure unearthed from fabulous Egyptian historical sites. But fishing tackle?

An archaeological team in Egypt has uncovered prehistoric fishing gear near an oasis south of Cairo.

They also uncovered sewing items, jewelry and weapons all made from animal bones. Antiquities covered the Pharaonic, Greek, Roman and Islamic periods.

Wonder which long ago fisherman lost his gear?

Zebra Mussels

Friday, May 15th, 2009

They found a zebra mussel in Lake Texoma!

I remember, as a kid, going down to Lake Texoma when the lake level was low and seeing all the mussels lining the ground where the water receded. So there have always been freshwater mussels in that lake, but the threat of the Zebra mussel is new.

In April, a zebra mussel was found on a boathouse communication line. This was the first instance of this species being found there.

Zebra mussels arrived here in the US from Asia in 1988. They’ve spread their way across waterways in 24 states.

The problem starts when a boat owner goes from an infected lake to a clear one. The mussels attach themselves to a boat and can live for several days out of water.

You can help solve this issue.

When you leave a body of water, take your boat to a car wash and completely wash it off. Then let it completely dry before hauling to another body of water.

Zebra mussels are a little over half an inch long and typically are striped, hence the name. If you locate one you may contact authorities in Texas at 1-800-792-4263 or 405-521-3721 in Oklahoma.

Trotlines

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

When I was young, and we were out fishing on the boat at Lake Texoma, the trotlines seemed to be everywhere. Floating milk jugs dotting the water. You’d see men pulling them up with big fish on them. It seemed like such an EASY way to fish. Why didn’t everyone do it?

I asked Dad, of course, I called them ‘troutlines’, and he explained that you needed to check them more often than we could. That’s why we didn’t fished in that manner.

Seems pretty easy, set the bait, tie it to a floating device and toss it in. Come back later.

Course, many places in this day and age do not allow trotlines of any kind so be sure to check the regulations in your area before you try setting a trotline.

Futuristic Fish

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

There’s a video on the popular video site, Youtube that shows a robotic fish developed by scientists at Essex University. It’s uncanny. This faux fish swims just like a real fish.

Hope they don’t get away……
