Fishing Tip

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Oklahoma bass like different bait than Kansas bass. Not necessarily, but bass tastes can change with the seasons and locale.

The best bet? Go fishing at your favorite fishing hole as often as you can. You’ll soon get a feel for what the local fish like and don’t like.

When in doubt, go fishing.

Another Bass Tip

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

While we’re looking to catch a bass (or two) the bass are not only feeding, they’re hiding from potential prey, us included. Because they’re wary, you’ll often find them where they feel safe. Fish around rocks, weeds and shady areas where they attempt to hide from prey. Farmers will sometimes toss their old cedar or pine Christmas tree into their farm ponds just for the fish to find refuge. But, you’ll find them in bright clear sunny areas too. Those spots make them feel safe as they can see predators approaching.

Bass can be caught with lots of different kinds of baits. They are particularly fond of crawfish (craw-dads), minnows even grasshoppers. Bass will also frequently for slow bait, bait that looks as if its struggling, even if it’s not their normal meal.

Once you learn how bass go for a meal, you’ll find it much easier to catch them in the future.

Bass Don’t

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Bass don’t like to have to hunt for their food. They tend to stay pretty stationary as they wait for their dinner to come the them, or swim past. Then, boy then they attack!

So once you find a spot where the bass are attacking, stay put and catch as many as you can!

Well as many as are legally possible.

One Fish Two Fish

Catch one fish? You can probably catch more in the same spot!

Bass like to hang out together. Fish of similar size will school together and when you nab a good one, well stay put, you’ll most likely catch more, in the same spot!

Bass Fishing Tip

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Pay attention to the seasons when fishing for bass. As winter starts to pass, the bass will leave the colder deeper waters and head on over to the warmer spots to spawn.

Similarly when the heat of summer is in swing, the bass will start heading over to the cooler, deeper waters.

Neither migration takes place overnight, they move slowly. Your favorite spots to fish will therefore change along with the seasons.

Bass Tip

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Did you know that bass have a metabolism that changes with the ambient water temperature? If the water’s colder than normal, the fish will be
less active and therefore less hungry. If the water’s warmer, well, warmer water means more active fish. An active fish is a hungry fish.

So pay attention to your local lake facts to determine current temperature fluctuations. It’ll help you decide when and where to fish as well as which bait to use.

Sorry Charlie,

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Seems like we’re eating too much tuna these days. We’re overfishing, so much in fact that this years tuna season in the Mediterranean will be cut by two whole weeks.

Quotas have been reduced as well, by 27 percent.

The Mediterranean bluefin tuna has been severely overfished in the past, and this is a last ditch effort to try and save the fish.

Do we stock up on canned tuna? Or do we stop buying tuna altogether? What’s the best course of action to save these fish?

Bro’s Boat Project

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

My brother is a trader.

Or maybe you could say he barters a lot. He ends up with lots of ‘things’ that he’s gonna do something with ‘one day’.

Case is point is this boat of his. He’s had it quite a while and it’s just gathered pine needles sitting out in the yard. He recently decided to sell the boat on Craigslist just to get it out of the yard. I obliged by taking some photos for him so that he’d be ready.

It took him over a week to find the papers to the boat, long enough for him to really think about the boat and long enough for him to decide to keep it! As his own personal restoration project.

Easter Egg Hunt at the Lake

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Sometimes, on my way home from town, I like to drive down to the lake.  For me, that’s Lake Thunderbird, outside Norman OK.   I was surprised Saturday to see SO many vehicles when I realized these weren’t fishermen, they were folks coming in for the annual Easter Egg hunt! Lol.

I did drive on down to the boat loading area, and while there weren’t any visible boats (they were probably already out on the lake), there were more trucks there than the week before.  Last week was REALLY windy here in OK. The water was really choppy so people weren’t venturing out.

Got me wondering, when does fishing in a boat really kick off in area lakes here in OK?  I bet some folks will tell me that it ‘never’ dies down!

Have you been fishing on an area lake yet this year?
